The painting is very similar in style and technique to the works of C. Mammes (shown below) This painting pleasing and a well done pastoral landscape of a farmer, oxen and cart in the fields surrounded by trees and rolling hills.
This painting is framed in a custom gilt wood frame.

Condition: Excellent, a few flakes near signature. Frame has a small lifting of gilt wear label was placed.

Barbizon Oil Painting,Charles Emile Jacques French (Benezit) 19th century landscape oil on canvas in original period gilt frame.
The artist, Charles Emile Jacques was born in France in 1813 and died in 1894, he was noted for his paintings of animals, especially farm animals.
Jacques was part of the Barbizon school, a movement of painters named after the village of Barbizon near Fontaine Bleau forest, France.
The back of the canvas has the stencil mark "P.Briautt 2 Rue du Louvre, Paris" the name of the canvas supplier. (Circa 1880)

Moritz Michael Daffinger (1790-1849) "was an eminent painter of miniatures who influenced the whole Austrian school," according to Schidlof. Daffinger was apprenticed to the Vienna Porcelain Factory, where he worked until 1812, while studying with Füger at the Academy of Vienna. A favorite of the Court, Daffinger painted most every member of the Imperial family, including several portrait of the Duke of Reichstadt. Additional sitters included Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailowitch, Princess Melanie Metternich, and Baroness Betty von Rothschild. Daffinger's exquisite works may be seen in most important museum collections.

Gary Ray was born May 30, 1952 in Venice, California. He's a 4th generation Californian. Ray was exposed to art at an early age. Primarily self taught, some of his greatest artistic influences have come from the works of Edgar Payne, and Hanson Puthuff. exposure has had an influence on his artistic outlook. Ray is also Ray began his painting career 13 years ago. He paints plein-air images of the Southern and Central California coastal regions, and inland areas. Being a working, traveling drummer since the age of 18, he has had the opportunity to tour the great cities, and museums of Europe. This heavily involved in Arts and Crafts collecting, and restoration of various Arts and Crafts items.
Ray has exhibited widely in Southern and Central California. In 2002, and now in 2003, his works have been successfully auctioned at John Moran's and Bonham & Butterfield's in the Los Angeles, California area. He works out of his studio in Venice, California.

English School, mid 19th century gouache painting under glass, original gilt framing. The subject is a beautiful young woman done by a highly skilled but presently unidentified artist.
Just purchased and in transit the painting is in as found condition, and a cleaning to board and glass is suggested.

From a private estate in Bristol. England.
Condition:
The painting has some areas of foxing, but this does not detract the from the excellent quality. Cleaning the portrait and inside of the glass will enhance this portrait greatly. Still presents beautifully.
