This is the most intriguing and spectacular pair of Japanese Shishi figurines. I specialize in figural Asian porcelain and these figures are a rare find,I have never seen a pair quite like these, and unfortunately I can not read the character marks. The Shishi, or Foos if you prefer appear to be Kutani, with starburst marks characteristic of late 19th centur Japanese. Great flamboyant style, pizazz and wonderful brilliant polychrome color and unique details. The Shishi have a unique charming almost folk art "mingei" feel. There was old felt backing which I have removed but find no identifying marks, so the figurines probably date to pre 1890. I have left a very early price sticker which came with the figurines.
