| Leçon de Musique." or "The Music Lesson" The original hangs in the Louvre. This copy is a most unusual oil painting on board probably from the turn of the century. It is quite likely a hand painted copy of the original. Lower edge signed Lancret. Inscribed in verso on the back, reading "Music / by Nicolas Lancret / Florence Johnson Studio / Los Angeles." The painting and the gilt gesso frame appear to be one piece. The second photo is a detail of the painting in the Louvre, Paris. Dimensions:23" diameter. Condition:Shows fine details despite overall areas of crazing, flaking and cracks around the rim which is appropriate for age. Nicolas Lancret (January 22, 1690 - September 14, 1743) was a French painter who may be Paris's best-known practitioner of the fête galante style of painting, an important art style in the Rococo period. Fête galante means, literally, gallant party. Many of Lancret's paintings depict outdoor parties and gatherings. Lancret's influences include Antoine Watteau and Claude Gillot. He attended the Académie Royale, but was expelled for bad behavior. He became a commercial success in the early 1720s; Louis XV was a frequent patron. There were many Lancret paintings adorning the walls of Versailles and other royal residences. Measurements: 23 Inches Diameter Year: 19th Century | |||||||||||||
