Chinese Longquan Celadon Dark Stoneware Ice-Crackle Vase by Ye Xiao-Chun
Ice-Crackle is one of ancient Chinese Longquan celadon glazes that praised by its ice cube patterns and dark stoneware color tone. Due to the nature of dark stoneware it is extremely difficult to craft tall artwork. On the other hand the ice-crackle needs multiple glazing in order to create the thick glaze effect. A tall artwork such as vase will cause trouble to the firing process, i.e. the mouth rim glaze has to fight against the gravity to ensure the final result. In some cases the success rate is lower than 10 percent due to the reasons mentioned.
Mr. Ye Xiao-Chun and his 3 other brothers were the pioneers who discovered the secret glazing recipe in year 2000. Though there are some other celadon artists that discovered the ice-crackled glazing formula afterward, the artworks from Ye’s brothers still appreciated by collectors all over Asia especially Japan. People attribute the reasons to the dark stoneware clay and really thick glaze on it.
This hand crafted ice-crackled vase is in perfect condition with Ye Xiao-Chun’s signature on the base and certificate in wooden box from his workshop. |
