An unusual notched form straight sided heavy water bowl; such a bowl would have been used to clean and wet brushes used in the application of cosmetics. The exterior of the bowl features waves and the interior a “Black Ship”, a somewhat fanciful conflation of a European ship with a Junk, with three European style figures handling ropes. A set of five, sometsuke tusurugata kozara, blue and white Crane shaped small dishes dating to the late seventeenth century. An identical set of dishes is illustrated in volume II of the Shibata Collection at page 272 no 714, there dated c.1680-1710. Their condition is good all the dishes show crazing to the glaze, two have a minute chip each to the edge. Similar shaped dishes have been excavated from the Sarukawa kiln at Arita. A finely potted and decorated pair of porcelain plates with foliate, barbed rims. Not dating from the 17th c. but from a later period. Miniscule bubbles and firing flaws in glaze suggest a 19th c. wood-fired kiln. Not modern reproductions. About 6-1/2" x 1". Perfect condition with no chips, frits, cracks, hairlines or repairs. A good medium sized “Black Ship” bowl decorated with a jimon ground inset with reserves of Galleons and Dutch merchants both to the interior and exterior. The bowl dates to the Meji period and the second half of the nineteenth century. The bowl measures 18.5cm or 7.3 inches in diameter and stands 8.5cm or 3.3 inches high to the rim. A fine square form dish kakuzara decorated with a scene of a large Pavillion or Temple Complex set upon a lakeside shore with Peony scroll motifs to two corners and a high foot ring with traditional comb foot. The design is one of those originally selected by the Shogun Ieharu (1737-1786) in 1773, and continued to be tendered and reserved for presentation to the Shogun during the Edo period. A rare square dish, kaku-zara, of cushion fom made in the early 18th century for Export to Europe. It is decorated in the centre with a classic kacho-ga motif of Chrysanthemums and Butterflies, and the border is painted with hosoge-mon, stylised floral motifs, reserved within a blue and gilt brocade ground with further stylised floral motifs. Early to mid-19th C. Chinese scholar's box carved with dragons chasing the flaming pearl of knowledge. The dragons on the lid are bracketed by smaller dragons. Exquisite, detailed carving with five toed dragon on lid and four toed dragons on front and back. This box was used for many years as evidenced by patina.
