Nanking or "Inclined Pines" vegetable dish and rare insert, c. 1790-1810. Dish is about 10-3/4” x 8-3/8” not including handles; insert is 11-3/8” x 9-1/4” and fits perfectly. Excellent condition save a chip to one of the applied leaves (please see our last image). This pattern, sometimes called "inclined pines" after motifs in the background, with a trellis diaper and spearhead border is said to have been given to Mrs. Samuel Powel by President and Mrs. Washington in 1797. Fine early 17th century Chinese export Kraak plate, made at Jingdezhen. About 8.125" (21.5cm) diameter. Border VII.3 as classified by Rinaldi in "Kraak Porcelain -- A Moment in the History of Trade" (see p. 106). Dishes found in the Hatcher Cargo belong to this group. Best Chinese export FitzHugh platter for the American market with superb dark blue cobalt decoration. Perfect condition with no chips, frits, cracks, hairlines or repairs.
