A very unusual pair of hakku-kaku, eight sided, or square canted form moulded dish probably adapted from a metal or lacquer form. It is decorated with a Sansui Chinese landscape with the subject of a fisherman on a lake. Fishing and fishermen were a popular motif in classic Chinese painting. The composition is painted in a pencilled calligraphic style “senbeki” modelled on the so-called “Master of the Rocks”; a style of decoration found on late Ming and early Qing Transitional porcelain. A powerful yet gentle looking Shishi lion playing with a brocade ball. The musculature, bones and toes are well defined and very natural. Judging by the blue-greyish glaze probably an Arita copy of the more widely seen Hirado Shishi as pictured on the cover of Louis Lawrence’s book ‘Hirado Prince of Porcelain’. A very unusual and rare Kakiemon large dish the interior decorated with the autumnal motifs of Wild Geese (kari) and reeds (Suzuki – Japanese pampas Grass); the design seems quite similar to a painting of this subject by the 16th Century painter Oguri Sokei. This subject Wild Geese and Reeds was a popular genre both in Chinese and Japanese Art and served as a metaphor for monastic discipline. An exceptionally fine large Kakiemon eight sided bowl with slightly everted lip characteristically finished with a fuchi beni, lip rouge, iron brown glaze. The exterior painted with four panels of seasonal flowers, including Peonies, Chrysanthemums and Bamboo. The interior decorated with a band of stylised lotus petals framing a frieze to the cavetto of zakuro, Pomegranates, and aosagi, Blue Herons, and an octagonal mikomi, containing a classic sansui, landscape. A fine Chinese stoneware hexagonal form wine or teapot, which follows the form of a metal precedent, and dates to late seventeenth or early eighteen century, the Kangxi period 1662-1722. The body is crisply moulded with panels of decoration containing set precious objects against an elaborate diaper ground based on lacquer and metal precedents of the late Ming and early Qing period. Set of five signed, hand-painted octagonal Mokubei style bowls, c. 1850-1890. Decorated with iron red, green, yellow, blue and aubergine enamels highlighted with gold. About 5" (12.5cm) W x 2.125" (5.5cm). High definition photos of all five on request. Mokubei (1767-1833) was one of the three great potters of Kyoto, Ninsei and Kenzan being the other two. Excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Our price includes shipping from Hawaii.

About 9-1/2" (24cm), Arita Imari plate, dating to the first quarter of the 18th century, decorated in the Imari palette with underglaze blue and overglaze iron red and gilt. Three panels are decorated with quail, peonies, chrysanthemums and barley. Three spurs to the base. Excellent condition with no chips, frits, cracks, hairlines, crazing or repairs. Please note: Ground is basically white with a tinge of very light blue. Our price includes shipping from Hawaii.
