Nanking mazarine made in Jingdezhen for the North American market, c. 1790-1810. About 14" L x 10-7/8" W x 1/4" H and in excellent condition with no damage and no repairs. This pattern, sometimes called "inclined pines" after motifs in the background, with a trellis-diaper and spearhead border is usually termed "Nanking". A pair of Soba Choku decorated in brocade style inset with reserves of Ume ni Uguisu, Plum blossom and Japanese Nightingales, and Ryu-mon, Dragons. Dating circa 1760-90. The cups measure respectively 9 and 9.1cm in diameter and 7.8cm high both are in good condition, no cracks, chips or restoration, both have a finely crazed glaze, a kiln fault, kannyu. The simplicity of the composition belies it is underlying complexity. Decorated entirely in cobalt blue with a kacho-ga theme of “yanagi ni sagi zu”, willow tree and heron design. The heron is a “go-isagi*, the night heron; a Zen Buddhist motif. The bird standing poised above a whirlpool waiting to strike a fish as it is drawn to the surface is a visual metaphor for the moment of enlightenment. A rare Japanese Imari teapot of typical form decorated with all over pattern of scrolling lotus arabesques incorporating Hoo and Aoi mon against an iron red ground. For a Coffee Cistern decorated in an identical pattern dated 1700-40 see No 98 at page 61 “The voyage of Old Imari Porcelains”. The teapot is 14cm in length and approximately 8.5cm high, sans lid.
