A finely painted sometsuke o-zara painted with a striking all over octopus scroll pattern, called by the Japanese tako-karakusa. Although these designs can appear rather plain to Western eyes, they required remarkable patience and expertise upon the part of the painter. Painting on the dry biscuit body of porcelain was akin to painting a fresco, so there was no margin for error. So these designs are all the more remarkable considering their extra-ordinary complexity.

The dish is decorated with two groups of figures two of whom can be identified with the eight Daoist Immortals and perhaps the female figures in the composition are intended to represent the Queen Mother of the West with two of her attendants overseeing from their Island retreat of Penglai some sampans in the foreground. Restored foliate Chinese export porcelain plate in the tobacco leaf pattern, c. 1760-1770. About 8-3/4" diameter. Apparently restuck and overpainted in places. Please note the shallow chip to the underside of the rim, visible to the reverse. Original enamel and gilt appear for the most part intact. Presents well, though not pristine. Shipping at cost.
