$260 - £160

An intriguing design painted in Wucai style, showing the Eight Immortals visiting Shoulao. The design is adapted from a Chinese design made for the Imperial Court in the later half of the reign of the Emperor Wanli, the second half of the sixteenth century. The Dragon in the centre is an amalgam of a Feiyu, Flying fish dragon, and a conventional dragon, rather than a true Feiyu, which would have had a pair of fins and fish tail rather than legs and conventional tail of this example. The border ...click for details

The dish has an unusual square form with indented corners and a raised almost vertical rim which suggests that it was probably intended to be used for the serving of sashimi, sliced raw fish. The shape resembles the form of a tsuba or sword hilt of mokko-gata form. By the late Mid Edo period sashimi had been growing in popularity, prepared by professional chefs, it was served both in aristocratic and in wealthy households. The somewhat surreal landscape contains a pair of Cranes, Tsuru, with ...click for details
