Large, important stoneware vase made by Shimaoka Tatsuzo, pupil of Hamada Shoji and until his death in 2007, Living National Treasure of Japan. The rim of this jar stands erect and opens outward. The neck has a soft inward curve, and the lower portion of the body swells out. The foot of the jar is short and flat. All but the neck is covered with the inlaid rope pattern for which this potter is well known. Possibly inspired by Yayao earthenware of the third century. Illustrated in Shibata Part I, p. 145, No. 369, this Arita Imari plate dates from 1690-1720 and is about 8.5" (21.5cm) in diameter. Excellent condition; no chips, frits, cracks, hairlines, repairs or glaze crackle. We can't say this plate was manufactured for the VOC, but the early Kraak-like border, hoho birds, pomegranate and other motifs are virtually identical to those found on VOC plates and chargers. Sand clings to the foot rim and there are three spurs. Please see MILLER'S CH ...click for details
