Rare, large Henan bowl with buff stoneware body, decorated with two rows of radiating overglaze brown strokes on a black ground. On the exterior, the russet streaked and mottled glaze falls well short of the unglazed foot. Yuan dynasty (1271-1368), North (Cizhou). The decoration seen here testifies to the continued popularity of russet-embellished black-glazed wares into the Yuan period, but also to the simplified nature of that decoration. Large Cizhou ovoid stoneware jar. Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) or earlier. About 12.5" (31.5cm) x 9" (22.5cm). Vigorous stylized iron-brown floral decoration on a creamy white slip ground. Good condition. No repairs, not even to neck, which appears to be intact. Please see photos for kiln damage, glaze loss and hairline cracks limited to one area (see last image). Found in a dry tomb, this unglazed tripod brazier has not suffered the damages normally associated with long burial. It dates from the Han Dynasty in China, 202 BC to 220 AD, and is in remarkable, untouched condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Bronze vessels may have been in contact with the brazier, which would account for the greenish residue both inside and out. Diameter is about 21 cm (8.25"); height is about 12 cm (4.75"). Authenticity is guaranteed. Shipping $35.
