Rare Arita Hokaoyama Kiln Reticulated Bowl 18C
A fine example of an Arita serving bowl with moulded and reticulated border of interlocking rings, wachigai, forming a band of auspicious “shippo”, the interior decorated in underglaze blue with Kiku Chrysanthemum blooms and Omoto, the Japanese sacred Lily, with thin bands of autumn mist threaded through the composition. The composition is an autumn theme combined with auspicious symbols of longevity and good fortune. The reverse undecorated but for a square seal mark to the interior of the foot-rim. The square seal mark contains the seal character Ho, Bao – Chinese - Precious Treasure – presumably intended as a reference to Hou, precious jewel, and the first syllable Ho of the kilns name. Shards with this mark have been recovered from excavations of the kiln site. Dating circa 1750-80. The condition of the bowl is good, but there are several hairline cracks to the vulnerable interlocking rim. No restoration or chips. The dish measures 22cm in diameter and stands 2.5cm high. Dating late 17th or early 18th century. Shipping at Cost.
