Rare Ko Imari Chesnut pattern Kikugata Dish c.1720 No 2
The dish is painted with Kure, chestnuts, a popular seasonal motif emblematic of Autumn. Unusually the design is largely drawn with a matt iron brown enamel rather the more usual matt black enamel, which is limited to the veining of the leaves. The porcelain has a distinct greenish blue caste to its glaze, and the unglazed footrim has a slightly orange tone with some sand adhesions. The a rim is divided into sixteen petal like divisions with a further five scattered raised kiku-mon and a larger half kiku-mon and a further recessed central kiku-mon reserve. The form would seem to be inspired by contemporary Japanese bronzes. A dish of identical form but decorated in a brocade style made for export is illustrated at page 354, no 2773, the Complete Catalogue of the Shibata Collection dated circa 1700-30, and see also no 3031 and no 3032 at page 386, dated 1710-40, largely decorated in a gilt palette. The dish would therefore date to the Kyoho period. The dish is in good condition with just some production glaze skip 20.5cm.
