Chinese Porcelain Jar with Molded Lotus Knop
SOLD

Exceptionally fine lidded jar with gilded knop of lotus buds, c. 1860. About 6" H x 4.5" wide. The cartouches depict a rooster and his hen on one side and a pair of mated quail on the reverse. Chickens symbolize good luck and the quail either courage or harmony between generations. Given the fact both sets of birds are mated it's possible the intent of the artist was to meld the symbolism together for the overall sentiment of a happy marriage. The porcelain is of the highest quality and the enamels artistically and technically superb. The gold scrolling is complex, fine and steady, the birds and flowers rendered in the finest over-glaze detail and color. The Qianglong reign mark on the base is beautifully executed. Excellent condition with no chips, frits cracks, hairlines or repairs. Insured shipping at cost.
