An interesting mid sixteenth century Jiajing period small dish decorated with a Deer Monkey, Bird and Bees in a landscape with a Peach tree. The pattern can be read in several ways, as a reference to the tale of the Monkey King and the Peaches of Immortality and as a rebus design “julu feng hou”, meaning “May you receive high rank and emolument” deriving from the combination of Deer, (lu), Bird (ju), Bees (feng) the curious blobs above the head of the Monkey (hou), or as simply a collection of auspicious motifs of longevity and good fortune, as reflected by the Peach and Precious objects that surround the central motif. Dating late Jiajing or possibly early Wanli. The reverse of the dish is decorated with a Karakusa arabesque, and an interesting four character mark. The dish is in good original condition with numerous kiln flaws both to the porcelain and the glaze. It measures 13.5cm in diameter, 3cm to the rim in height. The foot-rim measures 8cm in diameter. This is not a shipwreck piece. Shipping at Cost.
