"Sold Thank you"

Rare Large 19th C. (1800's) Chinese Export Porcelain Standing Cat in Famille Rose Canton with fine polychrome glaze and great expression.

Approximate size: 14 inches x 7 1/2 inches x 6 inches approx. Circa 1840-1880 Signed to base, Good Condition with No Restoration.

The beauty of famille rose (pink family) is the peony flowers combined with intricately detailed fruits and butterflies displayed in opaque colours that accent this cat. They are outlined in black. The fencai (opaque enamel) colours are shades of pink, red, blue, green, orange, yellow, and black. The central medallion on the back of the cat is called Rose Canton. Rose Canton is a medallion that contains no people. It can contain birds, flowers, foliage, fruits, or butterflies. A butterfly is a symbol of joy, a long and happy union, and a wish for longevity. From an ancient Chinese legend, two butterflies symbolize the spirits of two lovers who find eternal happiness after their reincarnation as a pair of butterflies. The fruits in the medallion are the Fingered Citron or Buddha's Hand Citron amid Peony flowers, foliage, and a pair of butterflies. Right spiral conch shells are rarer than left spiralling shells. It is said that the right-turning conch shell is the sacred voice of Buddha and symbolizes wisdom. When the sacred conch shell is blown, it is hoped that the vibrational energy will spread knowledge and understanding to All who hears its echo, you will see all of the above within this one cat. This was my Great Grandfather's Cat Sculpture, brought back from his Oriental travels, when he was "Commander of the Fleet" for the British Military, his name was Sir Gerard Noel from Hopton Hall in Norfolk, Valued at over £600, sold from a 99p start with No Reserve!
