Victorian Taxidermy Mounted Deer Slot D&S Staghounds
This is an Outstanding item of Taxidermy by W.K. Petherick Bird and Animal Preserver of East Reach Taunton in 1899, the Deer slot is mounted on a Mahogany Wood Shield and has an original Newspaper report about this particular hunt, pasted onto the reverse, the Deer slot is retained by a large round headed Bronze patina screw, brass loop to top for hanging, to the reverse in black paint it reads;

1899 Nov 26 F/-

The Newspaper cuttings reads as follows;

"W.K.Petherick Bird and Animal Preserver 6, East Reach, Taunton. then there's a bit i can't read, then;

"Run with the Devon and Somerset Staghounds. Larkbarrow was the fixture for Friday, the 6th, and as from it one of the best runs on record was got it was not a day to be allowed to pass without notice. The tufters were let go after a herd of fourteen deer in the Deer Park at ???? and pushed them over the fence into Manor Allotment, thence across Kittuck, where a hind singled out and pointing for Hawkcombe Head by way of Black Barrow and Porlock Common and on down Eastcott Farm and the Ashley Woods to the beach at Porlock Weir, where either owing to the coldness of the water or some other reason she turned away up the woods again, passing west of Birchanger Farm and across the road from Hawkcombe Head to the Weir, where she was viewed at close quarters by Mr Froude Hancock, who assured us to our content that it was a Hind, and not s male deer as had been hinted, so of we went again across Luccot Manor, at a nice pace, until Alderman's Barrow was reached, and the line was found going down through the hedge into Sir Thomas Ackland's new enclosure, across which and down to Wellshead fence by the stream, where she turned short round to the right and across the road to the Castle, and skirting Orchard Brake, up to Combe on to Warren Hill, then across East Tinford to Tom's Hill and Manor Allotment, heading for Culbone. Fortunately George Barwick was doing sentry here and cleverly turned the deer towards Badgeworthy, which she crossed opposite Hoccombe Water and about half a mile up she lay down in the water. The Tufters now over-ran the line a little, and got up on to Hoccombe Hill, but were soon brought back, and a herd of deer which were coming straight for us headed away by Mr Froude Hancock and other's. The Hind seemed wonderfully fresh considering the run she had already had, and ran the hill towards Brendon Two Gates at a good pace, with hounds in full cry at her heels. Turning a little short of the gatesshe ran across Withy Bush and the whole of Brendon Common to Malsmead and into Southern Wood, where for a few minutes check occurred, the first since Hawkcombe Head, but news was soon got of the deer having been seen going down the water, and Anthony pressed on by foot till he picked her up again just above Brendon, where after a few minutes she was pulled down at 2.30. The Run from find to finish lasted 4 1/4 hours and going hard most of the time. Distance 22 miles. The Country was splendid going. I hear that the Exmoor Foxhounds had two grand runs last week- one 2 1/2 hours and one of 1 1/2 hours. XX"

In Total this splendid Deer Slot Shield measures 10" x 5 3/4" and the slot itself 6 1/2" I can't imagine there was ever a finer Animal or slot, a rare opportunity from MY OWN PERSONAL COLLECTION i'm sad to see her go but the house we're moving to is a lot smaller, so give her a good and proud home, it made me cry when i first read this newspaper cutting and it still moves me today.
