Antique Steel Plate Engraving Titled "The Poacher" showing a wonderful fox watching the game birds rise, after Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873 a famous painter of animals, was born in London, the son of John Landseer ARA. He first exhibited works at the Royal Academy in 1815, at the precocious age of 13. One of Britain’s most important artists, Landseer is featured in most collections of 19th century British art.
This incredibly detailed antique work-of-art cannot begin to be appreciated in this format. This fine piece has a quality that has to be seen to be fully enjoyed. The lines are so fine and the workmanship so meticulous, that it is hard to believe it was printed from a steel plate actually etched by a human hand. Measures 26 1/2 inches x 22 inches approx. Framed and glazed in thin black gilt wood. in Very Good Condition, Circa 1920-1940s |
