This is an excellent example of the traditional Japanese male mask, Buaku, finely carved in the 19th century.
Buaku, is one of the character of the Japanese comic theater, Kyogen, that is commonly associated with demonic roles. Although the mask presents a fearsome expression, its nothing but a farce, because humor is at the heart of the Kyogen play.
The mask is highly detailed and polished. It is signed Ikko on the horizontal bar that serves as the mask's himotoshi, on the back of the mask.
It measures approximately 1.32 inches (3.4cm) wide, and 1.75 inches (4.5cm) tall. It is in excellent preserved condition, as you may be able to see in the posted photos.
