This is one of those fantastic satsuma masterpieces where every mm of space is filled in by a wonderful design, known as "ten thousand cranes". Those tiny cranes were laid on with thick enamel that stand out in relief... easily seen in the larger detail. There are 4 larger golden cranes around. A fun Edo period carved iron tsuba with 2 cute expressive rams (goats or maybe even rabbits) in deep relief per side. A gold bronze dot for each eye. Lots of open work. Dates from 1800-1849.

About 2.8" diameter slight oval, with good weight. Very good condition.

A fun Japanese mixed metal "shakudo" bronze vase with a gorgeous long tail rooster. He is found in northern Japan and has a silver tail which can really be as long as 9 feet. His feet and beak are in gold. Silver plum blossoms on the branches. The red crown and wattles are in copper. Signature says "carved by Kho-Shyu". (Chalk rubbed into the signature to take pic.) From the Meiji era 1868-1912.

An antique Japanese satsuma tazza (compote) of rare and vigorous form. It has a scalloped bowl rather like chrysanthemum petals. The broad pedestal is pierced. It was hand thrown and slightly asymmetrical, having its own aethestic appeal. The Japanese appreciated asymmetry. No marks. The center design is that of a feudal lord or daimyo with an attendant kneeling next to him, perhaps bearing alarming tidings about the battle. A graceful bijin (beauty) woodblock print by the 18th century artist Kiyomine Torii (1787 - 1868), a pupil and grandson of Torii Kiyonaga of Edo (Tokyo). His prints of this early period are generally considered his best. His bijin often have the elongated lines leaning slightly backwards and gazing at the long train of her kimono, typical of the Torii school. He later used the name Torii Kiyomitsu II. There is a text frame on the upper right describing the event. The legend below gives the printing year and date (8th month 4th day), and publication date of 8th month the 7th day. A fine Edo period (1603-1868) or earlier iron tsuba of a classic form and with mixed metal decorations in gold and silver. A wonderful butterfly with dark patinated wings and with gold highlights. The spray of flowers in gold and silver. Those fierce samurai loved their flowers and butterflies! And the metal smiths were without equal working with mixed metals.

A fine antique Japanese Satuma teapot from the Meiji era. One scene is that of a golden pagoda and temple with cherry blossoms and having Mt. Fuji in the background. Lots of gold highlights and all very finely detailed. The rim of the teapot lid and body are outlined in black, highlighted with gold gilt. The reverse side of the pot is signed Shisan with a mon against a typical Satsuma creamy crackle finish.

A fine Nabeshima blue and white plate or charger with a large peacock displaying on a scholar rock. High footrim and designs typical of Nabeshima. Unusual size. Fine porcelain biscuit and excellent color.

12" diameter, 3 3/8" high to rim. Very good condition, 2 short and shallow glaze hairlines at rim. One sand grain from kiln on the beak. Fine and smooth white porcelain biscuit.
