An antique Japanese satsuma tazza (compote) of rare and vigorous form. It has a scalloped bowl rather like chrysanthemum petals. The broad pedestal is pierced. It was hand thrown and slightly asymmetrical, having its own aethestic appeal. The Japanese appreciated asymmetry. No marks. The center design is that of a feudal lord or daimyo with an attendant kneeling next to him, perhaps bearing alarming tidings about the battle. An elegant pair of slender satsuma vases with beautifully delineated and executed designs. The overall theme is the profuse hundred petal cherry blossoms of spring with plump Japanese bluebirds fluttering. These spring scenes are on the main body of the vase and two panels of the long neck. Separating them are narrow brocade and diaper bands highlighted by jewel effect enamel accents.
