A beautiful English sterling serving (table) spoon from the period of George III (1760-1820). This is an early example of repousse, and the silver is heavy gauge. You can see in the close-up that stipple and chasing were added over the punched up repousse designs. Lots of fine detail. Plenty of deep chase work on the handle as well.
London sterling hallmark for the years 1807-8. The maker's mark is for Richard Crossley & George Smith, famous as spoon makers in the early 19th century. (cf. Jackson's Hallmarks). Monogram as shown. 8.7" long. Beautiful condition with a wonderful polish. This English spoon and its brethren served as the models for Kirk and Gorham repousse sterling in the second half of the 19th century. If you like repousse sterling, this is an early Georgian serving spoon not to be missed. |
