Antique Delft Saucer Dish - Faience Portrait
A wonderful 17th century Delft saucer dish with a woman's portrait in the center looking surprised. Wonder what is that round little object in front of her mouth. Nice border motif and foliated rim. Creamy thick glaze with a hint of green covers brownish grey biscuit.

Label "Collection of Vivian Hawes". She was a noted collector of early ceramics and made substantial bequests to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and many other institutions in the area.

5" diameter. One hairline (see back) and some crackling of the thick glaze typical of this very old Delft which is a type of faience. Pretty good condition.

Notes: The marks on the back are glue remnants from an old label. The small brown well inside the top rim is a spot where the glaze missed. The spot at her ear is kiln grit not chip.
