A porcelain snuff bottle with exceptionally fine detail in the 2 landscape scenes. This type of hairline thin decoration is known as grisaille and literally painted with a brush of single hair. A basic concept in Chinese landscape painting is that it encapsulate a world. These small paintings certainly succeeded. A light touch of some red on one side, very sophisticated color usage. The top is a cat's eye stone very pronounced at the right angle. Slightly dimpled bottom with no marks.
3" by 1.5". Good condition no cracks or chips. Estate item not recent import. This type of fine detailed paintings were a trade mark of the early Republic of China porcelain in the 1920-30s when recognized artists painted on porcelain as a medium. The 2 progressively larger detail pics are both considerably bigger than the actual bottle. Yet they show no deterioration of resolution.
