A double dragon and phoenix polychrome (wucai) bowl with a further dragon medallion inside. There are underglazed double rings around the rim, the foot and the bottom reign mark. This bowl has the mark of Qianlong, and it has the unmistakable patina and biscuit characteristics of genuine old imperial ware. I guarantee this is at least 1850 or earlier.
6" diameter and 2.5" high. Excellent condition, clearly cared for as a prized item by previous owners. Note: This is a design which originated in the Qianlong era and was made for the palace in every reign afterwards. Most likely it was made for auspicious occasions. The dragon stood for the emperor and the phoenix for the empress. |
