A fine imperial mark and of the period Daoguang (1821-1850) famille rose bowl showing flying butterflies and bitter gourd blossoms and flowers hanging on both inside and outside of the bowl with the twig crossing over the rim. Known as "over the wall", this is a technique developed for imperial porcelain in the Qianlong era. This particular design and in the same size was made in every Qing (Ch'ing) reign afterwards. The famille rose enamel is thick and gives texture. This Daoguang execution is excellent and matches the earlier quality in all respects, only the color is a little softer. The later Guangxu and Xuantong versions are visibly of lesser quality. Porcelain of this one is transluscent, very fine. Underglazed blue imperial seal mark and of the period. Imperial porcelain.
4.3" diameter by 2.5" high. Fine condition with no damage.
Notes. 2) A Qianlong or Guangxu example is sometimes seen at the major auctions. Daoguang and Jiaqing are harder to find. A pair was sold at Sotheby's New York, Sept 06 for US$24,000, detail inside the bowls not so good as this one and the colors less vibrant.
3) Qing Dynasty Emperor's time table: |
