The twelve amuletic penate stone pendants (TEH166 A-C, E-K, M and O) in this group were all collected at the Mixtec site of Mitla in the mid-20th century by the late Dr. Allen Heflin. Dating c.1100-1500AD, and hand-fashioned from green and gray anhydrite and serpentine, every one was hand-carved in the anthropomorphic style. The 24 variscite (a hydrous aluminum phosphate mineral) beads and pendant that make up this stunning necklace (PBF205) are all attributed to the Tairona horizon of Colombia dating c.1000-1600AD. The mineral variscite, though looking much like green turquoise, was confirmed through the use of a refractometer that showed a spot refractive index of 1.58. This 15” x 17” shadowbox frame (AXH65) contains 66 authentic Pre-Columbian atlatl points and arrowheads all found by the late Dr. Allen Heflin in the Lake Sayula area of Jalisco, west Mexico. As is typical of points actually found in the field, a number of them have minor dings and chips, but on the whole are in good condition.
