Here’s a fascinating enigma! This carved, 4 ¾” tall, dark greenish black steatite elbow pipe (BWO6) came to its owner as possibly Aztec in origin. In overall very good condition, even with its head glued on (along a simple break) and a number of surface scratches and bruises from repeated handling, this piece has all of the attributes of being hand-made albeit with the possible help of historical period tools. This group of six rugs (MLB.64-67, 71 and 72) is from the Battles collection, this time not from Asa’s but from his wife Marge’s.
