From the estate of the late Chester Howard, this rather spectacular beaded floral strip or belt (TEH.F8.3) measures 30 ½” x 4 ½”. Dated to the mid 20th century, Howard noted that the belt was either Crow or Northern Cheyenne. Due to the initials ‘MS’ shown in cobalt beads, it is believed that the belt may either have been made under contract for a specific party, or that the initials were for the name of the Native American who made the belt. This decorative, early 20th century pipe-axe (RLK2) was purchased in March of 1988 at a shop in Ft. Collins, Colorado where a Native American named Night Walker was selling items from his personal collection, as well as those from others of the Northern Plains reservation to which he belonged in order to support needy tribal members. This large and colorful beaded bag (TEH.F6.2) is from the Yakima tribe of Washington. Measuring 10” x 12” in size (not counting fringes or thong handles), the Plateau bag dates into the mid-20th century and was once glued into a decorative frame by its owner, the late Chester Howard. Although sinew sewn and quilled in the Sioux style, there is a question about whether this large and colorful bag (TEH.F1.1) was really Native American made. It appears to date into the mid-20th century, but at least one collector and dealer has expressed the opinion that it could have been made as a Boy Scout project, although another thought it was simply of late vintage. This beaded black felt bag (TEH.F3.2) measures 7 ¼” in length and 5 ¼” in width. In overall good, worn condition, the interior of the bag below the drawstring is lined with canvas. Once glued to a decorative frame by the late Chester Howard, the bag was easily removed with acetone. Noted by Howard to be Chippewa in origin, the floral beadwork points to an early 20th century style incorporating a fair number of faceted metal seed beads. Collected in 1961 by the late Chester Howard, founder of the Colorado Mineral Society in the 1930s, this 8” x 12” frame (TEH13) contains three strands of shell, truquoise, lapis, glass and coral beads, along with a 2” long silver arrowhead-shaped pendant that holds a coral cabochon. This earlier 20th century beaded circular bag (TEH.F9.4) is from the collection of the late Chester Howard. Measuring just a bit more than 4 ¼” from top to bottom, round bags of this style were called medallion pouches for the early Indian Peace Medals they were designed to hold. The beadwork is in overall good condition, but the leather itself is rather stiff and has a small tear and hole on its lower backside. This heavy, 9 ½” long black soapstone carving (BB66) depicts a powerful Eskimo hunter atop an ice flow below which lies two wounded seals.
