The hide on this tightly drawn drum (AXH1356) appears to be that of an African ruminant…but the exact type is unknown. Also unknown, in spite of the fact that the drum is from the estate of the late Dr. Allen Heflin, is the location at which it was acquired. In overall very good condition with the hide stretched out and hide-strip tied over a tapered wood bowl, the resonating sound produced by light slapping of the surface can’t help but bring exotic images to mind. Measuring just about 10 ¼” in ...click for details

This 26" long quiver (AXH2998) was made by rolling an antelope (?) hide into a tube, and then tying the edge and closed end with cord. This is from the Dr. Allen Heflin collection and is one of the rare pieces on which provenance has not been noted (but probably acquired in the 1960s). I believe it's African in origin, however, and similar to other provenanced pieces that were in his collection. The open end of the quiver was closed with an extended piece of the hide by folding it over ...click for details

The late Dr. Allen Heflin was more than ‘pretty good’ about documenting pieces in his collection, but occasionally…we find one without provenance. This 20” long, hand-made iron sword (AXH2995) is one of those. My guess is, comparing to other items from his extensive collection, that this was acquired in North Africa, and dates into the earlier 20th century. Weapon of war? Field tool? Really don’t know and don’t want to hazard a guess, but with its obvious age and the tool-marking evidence tellin ...click for details

This attractive, 22 ½” long, three-toned reed basket (AXH2989) is from Liberia (so-marked on the bottom in black ink). From the late Dr. Allen Heflin collection, he probably acquired it in the mid 1960s while on duty in Rome with the U. S. Department of Agriculture. In excellent condition and a very nice example of the style, it has a raised rim formed by two rods bent into an oval shape, and measures approximately 1 ¾” high at its mid-point side. This would make a very nice centerpiece on a din ...click for details

The late Dr. Allen Heflin purchased this 20" long, colorful, painted hide quiver (AXH2999), complete with seven handmade, iron-tipped arrows in Khartoum, Sudan, Africa in February 1967 (so-marked in white ink on the side). Heflin did not note tribal affiliation, and not being sure which to assign it to?I won?t make a guess! The quiver and arrows are all in very good condition, and were most likely made for the tourist trade (they show no signs of use). The approximately 19" long arrows ...click for details

This attractively toned hardwood ball-headed club (AXH2996) was acquired by the late Dr. Allen Heflin in November 1966 (so-marked with black ink on the handle). Heflin also noted that the club was from the Zulu tribe in the Pretoria are of South Africa. In excellent condition, the club is 21 3/8” in length. It comes with a small display card, a biographical sketch about Heflin and his large collection, and a map of Africa highlighting the area of Pretoria.

Marked with black ink on the uncured hide strip sling of this quiver (AXH2991) is the notation ‘AKAMBA or MASAI, KENYA, 1/23/65’. No arrows came with this 24 ½” long quiver when acquired, so it comes without any. The foundation of the quiver is a length of hollow split bamboo or cane that was covered with uncured, probably fresh antelope (?) hide that shrunk tightly onto the cane as it dried. A removable end cap made from hide was used to protect and hold the arrows in place. Not one of the grea ...click for details
