Battles Collection: Indian Jewelry & Masks – Group A
This twelve-piece assortment (MLB 2, 4-8, 9, 11, 14, 18, 19 and 23) includes nine pieces of Navajo and Zuni Indian jewelry, plus three striking hand-carved wood masks, one from the NW Coast Tlingit and two from members of the Iroquois Five Nations group in the Grand River country of Canada, each individually priced and shown in its own photo group. From the varied and large collection of the late Asa Battles, a noted Denver area artist who specialized in Western and Indian art, the pieces in this group date from the early to mid-20th century. Touch-marks on some of the jewelry pieces include: ‘Effe Zuni’, ‘G. Adeky’, ‘J V B’, the image of a walking bird, and the image of a paw print. Two of the masks have tags identifying the makers: ‘He Hunts Animals’ of the Onandaga Wolf Clan; and ‘Floating Sky’ of the Turtle Clan. All of the jewelry items have been previously worn and range in condition from fairly good to excellent. The covered walls of the Battles collection room included the masks, all three of which are in good condition. With prices ranging from $125 to $600, each photo first lists the item inventory number in brackets, followed by a brief description, a numerical grade between 1-10 based on condition (with a 10 being representing the highest quality), the probable culture, approximate date, and finally the item price. Every piece comes with a small display card, a short biographical sketch about the artist Battles, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. Select or ask any question by referring either to the Trocadero ITEM # or the STOCK # at the top of this page, and ALSO to the item’s INVENTORY NUMBER as shown in the brackets on its photo. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing time, try our popular ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced! And if you want to further refine the group, add one or two additional modifiers at the same time such as ‘Indian, Precolumbian, Stone, Pot, Gold, etc.’ Any item that has been sold in one of the groups of twelve will be so noted on its own photograph.
