Burnished Colima Melon Jar with Dog's Head Handle
This highly burnished red ware melon jar (CLP 1) is one of my favorite items from Claudia Proto's collection of West Mexican Pre-Columbian art. 8" wide and 6 1/4" tall, it simply bubbles with fun and style in spite of the its obviously damaged condition ( in our opinion, it still deserves a quality rank of '7', with 10 being the tops). Assigned to the Colima horizon dating c,100-300AD, it suffers a bruised nose and a rim that is missing a couple of chunks with some glue to hold another in place. It can be easily repaired and brought back to its almost original state by a good friend and fine art restorer whose name we'll be more than happy to provide upon request. The jar has been priced at a level to allow the buyer room for a reasonable restoration fee. It comes with a small display card, a history of the Claudia Proto collection, a map of Mexico highlighting the Colima area, and our certificate guaranteeing lifetime authenticity to the original buyer. You can see all of the other items from the Proto collection by typing the three letters CLP into the search box on any of our catalog pages. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various other listings, and at the same time limit your browsing experience, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced and available! Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph. And if you want to further refine the group, add one or two additional modifiers at the same time such as ‘Indian, Precolumbian, Stone, Pot, Gold, etc.’ Any item that has been sold will be so noted on its photograph.
