Antique Tribal Earrings, Afghanistan
Ask a goldsmith today to duplicate this matched set of pear-shaped gold earrings (WJF393), and hed probably throw you out of his shop! Native made and from Afghanistan, this extraordinary example of Near Eastern gold work is dated c.17th-19th century (but could be significantly older). Measuring 2 from top of loop to bottom of earring, they look like miniature pinecones. Well over 100 small gold cones project from the surface of each. A small three-sided pyramid made of granulated gold beads decorates the bottom. There are two small bezels on the upper shaft of each earring, one empty where a stone was lost, the other holding a rough translucent green stone that might be emerald, or perhaps glass. In overall very good, but not perfect condition, the damage noted consists of the two missing stones, and one cone that is twisted partly away from its attachment to the surface of the underlying base leaving a tiny hole (the only way I found it was with a 10X loupe). The metal tests at 18K+ gold with a standard jewelers acid testing kit. Sturdy and very wearable, and for the lady who loves unique earrings, this wonderful set will bring admiring comments from any who see it. It comes with a small display card.
