Two Pre-columbian Ollas With Cat Head Handles
The two yellow ware ollas in this lot (LLL563) were found in west Mexico in the mid-20th century by the late Lynn Langdon, and attributed to the Pre-Classic Colima horizon dating c.300BC-300AD. Intact without restoration and in overall very good condition with the noted minor nicks, the eared handles on this charming pair represent cat or jaguar heads with snouts buried in the bodies of the respective jars. The largest (LLL643) of the well-matched pair is 4 3/8” tall and has a small chip on its rim. The smallest (LLL563) of the pair is 3 ½” tall and one of the cat’s ears is chipped. A great set for the cat lover that will be broken up and sold individually if only one is desired ($475 for LLL643, and $425 for LLL563). The ollas come with a small display card, a biographical sketch about Langdon, a map of Mexico highlighting the Colima area, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
