Model Temple Made From Stone And Shell
My best guess is that this group of Pre-Columbian artifacts (LLL1026) was probably once assembled to represent a model temple. Found together at one site in the deep shaft tomb area of West Mexico in the mid-20th century by the late Lynn Langdon, most of the stone items, made of greenish-gray argillite, along with the carved mother of pearl shell strips, have remnants of what appears to be some sort of binding adhesive that held the entire group together. Unfortunately, it cannot be determined whether all of the pieces making up the temple were found, but it appears that most were. The slightly curved shell strips, one glued together along a simple break, measure about 2” in length. The rectangular stone facade with the T-shaped holes is 3 ½” wide at its top. Assigned tentatively to the Nayarit horizon dating c.300BC-600AD, assembling these items would provide an interesting if not challenging project. On 6/4/07, we received an email from student of art history and Pre-Columbian admirer, Nick H. in Luxembourg who was kind enough to suggest two possible reconstructions that could be made from the various pieces in this group. They are attached as photos #6 and #7. If any viewers would like to challenge Nick's ideas, I will be glad to mediate (Nick just loves a good discussion!!). This unique assemblage is presented in a 8” x 12” glass-fronted collector frame along with a write-up about Langdon and his collection, a map of west Mexico highlighting the area in which the group was found, and our certificate guaranteeing that the pieces are Pre-Columbian in age. NOTE: if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have twelve different items on a page, each individually priced!
