MAYAN CERAMIC FISH RATTLE, ISLAND OF JAINA
This superb Mayan fish rattle (RFM17), made from a well-sculpted mold, measures 6 ¾” in length. The back half of the hollow fish is partially blocked to hold what are probably a half dozen or so ceramic pellets that freely rattle when shaken. The fish has been glued across its body along simple breaks in front of the dorsal fin, but no restoration is in evidence. The toothy and fierce looking image of the decorative fish brings to mind a large carp. From the island of Jaina off the Yucatan west coast, the rattle dates into the Late Classic period, c.550-950AD. This fine piece is from the local collection of one of the founders of the now defunct Rocky Mountain Institute of Pre-Columbian Studies. It comes with a small display card, a map of the Yucatan highlighting the island of Jaina, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. Don’t forget to watch for the additional pieces that will soon be listed under the prefix RFM from this interesting and newly consigned collection.
