AZTEC CRYSTAL QUARTZ RABBIT: EX DR. HEFLIN
Harkening back to the tales of the mysterious Aztec crystal quartz skulls comes one of the real enigmas from the noted Pre-Columbian art collection assembled by the late Dr. Allen Heflin. As that extraordinary collection was unpacked, deep within a box filled with an almost endless assortment of stone artifacts, this beautifully carved and polished crystal quartz rabbit (AXH1465A) was uncovered. Measuring 4 ½” in length, 2 ½” in height, and 2 ½” in width, it has two holes, obviously meant for suspension, one each that goes between the rabbit’s two bent front legs and its body. In almost perfect condition, the only significant damage to this stunning artifact is a one-inch flat chip along the side of the rabbit’s right foreleg...hardly noticeable with just a casual glance. Near surface and non-critical fractures, typical of massive quartz crystal, course across its sleek body with occasional flashes of iridescent color, and traces of what appears to be residual organic material shallowly invading many of the fractures that reach the surface. That material also appears as small, brownish patches in the suspension holes and other depressed areas of the figure. Of all the marvelous artifacts in the Heflin collection, this favored piece, with obvious good reason, has taken the longest time to reach the buyers’ market. Uncharacteristically, no information was found either on the rabbit, or anywhere within Heflin’s notes as to its origin, but the consensus of those who have examined it is that, if original, it’s almost surely the work of the Aztecs. The rabbit was recently submitted to John Jordan of Jordan’s Antiques and Appraisals for authentication. Located in Dana Point, California and a member of the Certified Appraisers Guild of America, Jordan has long specialized in large stone Pre-Columbian and Oriental sculpture and has operated a gallery and privately dealt in authentic Pre-Columbian art and antiquities since 1969. Jordan’s final report confirms that the rabbit is an authentic Aztec stone carving dating c.1150-1400AD placing it into the Aztec II and III Period. He further states that this quartz amulet is larger than normally found, and that pieces such as these were used or worn by people of importance or rank. This unique relic (a symbol of the Moon), probably related to shamanistic rituals, comes with a display card, a copy of a memoriam to Heflin published in the Missouri Archaeological Society Quarterly in the late 1990s, a map of the Valley of Mexico showing the extent of the great lakes that filled it at the time of the Spanish Conquest, the original Jordan report, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity. Ask any question by first referring to the Trocadero Number on this page, and/or the inventory number for this powerful amulet.
