ANCIENT ROMAN UNGUENTARIUM FROM CYPRUS
Measuring 4 ½” in height and leaning slightly on its somewhat slanted base, this ancient glass bottle (RG29) is known as an unguentarium. Pale aqua in color, it was acquired in Cyprus in the early 20th century by the then US Ambassador to France, Walter Evans Edge, and attributed to the Roman period, c.100-300AD. Intact and in overall very good condition, there is the faintest evidence of a pontil scar on its base and there is a minor crack along the edge of its flared mouth. The inside of the bottle still has a thin and patchy coating of mud that can probably be cleaned out. A nice example of the type, it comes with a small display card and a certificate that both guarantees authenticity and incorporates a brief biography about Edge.
