| This is one of the most unusual and fun examples of Precolumbian gold we’ve had. Describing the imagery defies the imagination! Dragon? Jaguar? Pop-eyed frog? Probably none of the above, it is more likely and quite simply to be the product of a very imaginative Precolumbian artist and gold smith. Attributed to the Veraguas horizon of Panama, dating c.500-1200AD, the ‘dragon’ sits atop a bell that has a wonderful tinkling resonance. This pendant (TFX116) was lost wax cast using the high copper, low gold alloy known as tumbaga. It was then surface enriched using the depletion gilding technique. 1 ¾” in height and weighing 36.5 grams, it is in overall very good condition and quite wearable. There are a few spots where the thick layer of surface gold has flaked off and a couple of pinholes have penetrated the bell to its interior (absolutely no harm, non-weakening, and not at all distracting from the beauty of this whimsical relic). This great bell-pendant comes with a small display card, a map of Panama outlining the Veraguas area, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity. | ||||||||||
