| The twelve Pre-Columbian copal lots illustrated in this group of twelve (LLL 734B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, N, O and P) were accumulated in West Mexico in the mid-20th century by the late Lynn Langdon. Varying in number from a single large piece in one lot to hundreds of pieces in the biggest, the greatest dimension of all of the illustrated pieces ranges from less than one millimeter to close to 60 millimeters. Copal, originally pine sap, is an opaque to yellowish-orange translucent transitional member between the end products of gummy resin and amber. Known to have been used by Pre-Columbian shamans to induce a trance-like state, it was burned as incense to form billowing black storm-like clouds of smoke that rose up to the sky as food offerings to the gods. Collected by Langdon in the state of Nayarit and associated with sites ranging in age from c.300BC-1300AD, no Pre-Columbian collection can be complete without an example of this aromatic material. Each lot comes with a small descriptive card, biographical sketch of Langdon, a map high-lighting the area in which found, and our guarantee of authenticity. Select or ask any question by referring first to the Trocadero Item Number on this page, and then to the LLL Inventory Number shown on the given photograph. Any that have been sold will be so-marked. If you’d like to see all of the currently listed items from the Langdon collection, simply type LLL into any of the search links in our catalog, and a comprehensive listing will appear. And if you’d like to see all of the various other items listed in our popular group of twelve format (a great way to save on browsing time), enter the single word TWELVE into the search link. If interested only in a particular type, add a descriptive word to your search such as jewelry, pot, textile, gold, coin, etc. | |||||||||||||||
