Each of the glass and crock ink and mucilage bottles in this group (SXP6, SXP9, SXP12, SXP13, SXP14, SXP195, SXP198, SXP199, SXP201, SXP202) was dug at the site of Ft. McPherson, Nebraska. Established in 1863 where an important Indian trail crossed the South Platte River, it was first called Cottonwood Post, but took its final name in 1866 in honor of Brig. Gen. James B. This 12 5/8” long, 8 ½ pound cast bronze canon (TEH119) was purchased in Morelia, Mexico in 1960 by the late Chester Howard, adventurer, collector, and founder of the Colorado Mineral Society in 1936. Believed to date back into the early 19th century colonial period, the canon has no markings and except for its bent ball handle, is in excellent condition.
