A stunning oil on wood panel by the famous, well-listed English sporting painter, Alfred C. Havell (1855-1928). He was best known for his hunting paintings, as well as his famous racehorse portraits ("Great Derby Winners"). Signed and dated A. C. Havell, (18)85. The talent here is obvious and outstanding. There is some minor flaking of the paint, which is age related. Framed size measures 17 X 15 inches. This one is in its original gesso frame which retains most its gilding. An outstanding oil on canvas after the famous painting entitled "Setters" by Thomas Blinks (British, 1860-1912). He is best known for his paintings of sporting dogs in the field. He exhibited 29 works at the Royal Academy from 1883-1910. Blink's original "Setters" was painted in 1893 and sold at auction at Bonham's in N.Y. in 2007 for $94,250. Portrait of 'Ayrshire', a dark bay thoroughbred stallion of great fame. One of a pair that we have that is signed and dated by T. (Thomas) Bicks, 1901. Ayrshire (1885-1910) has a distinguished career on the track, winning 11 of 16 starts, including the English Derby in 1888.
