This is a very early, naive painting on a thick old wood plaque from Italy. The image is of Saint Sebastian (died c. 288), who was a Christian saint and martyr, and who is said to have been killed during the Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. He is commonly depicted in art and literature tied to a post and shot with arrows. The plaque, which is very heavy and measures 19 X 13 inches, is very old; I was told it dates to circa 1800 but it may be older. Not sure what sor ...click for details
