Large double panoramic engraved scenes depicting various pursuits of the sporting life in England from around 1800. They were meticulously hand colored many years ago and much of the pigment has faded out giving the images a soft faded patina. This is one from a collection of three for sale. The Alkens were a very famous family of sporting artists and Samuel Alken, Snr (1756-1815) was a famous aquatint engraver. This framed collection of antique cigarette cards featuring famous female jockeys is just too much fun! These were from the Allen and Ginter's Tobacco Company of Richmond, VA. They were premium giveaway items, found in boxes of cigarettes, similar to baseball cards, and the ones featuring women are the rarest of all. This is a large, beautiful antique print of the famous English jockey, John (Jack) Watts (1861-1902). Born at Stockbridge in Hampshire, and apprenticed to Tom Cannon, Jack Watts rode his first winner at the age of 15 in 1880. Starting from scratch he worked his way up to be stable jockey. Watts was a natural horseman with a quiet effective style. In his private life he was equally genuine and straight-forward.
