| This is a hand-painted smoking set from the late 1800's featuring a dapper fox reading and holding a drink. It bears the Karl Schneider mark and is numbered. It is almost 5 inches tall and 4 inches wide. There appears to have been a repair to a break from long ago. This is almost impossible to see from the front, but is visible on the bottom and back where a slightly darker colored bonding material was used. The price reflects this repair. Karl Schneider founded his porcelain manufactory around 1859, together with modeler Karl Unger and silent partner Hermann Hutschenreuther. He had formerly worked at the Wallendorf Porcelain factory. The company prospered and throughout the late 19th and early 20th century won many awards at World Fair Expositions for their fine figural porcelains and bisque doll heads. Smoking sets were popular during this time and gained favor as decorative items, providing containers for cigarettes, cigars, tobacco, matches, ashes, etc. | ||
