| We have a very early liquor chest from England or Scotland, circa late 1700's. All the hardware is original and the hinges have been restored to a sturdy working condition allowing the lid to remain open, although this is not advised. The handpainted wallpaper is French and was probably added in the early 1800's, and is in remarkably fine, though fragile, condition. The hand-blown glass decanters are all original and their hand-applied foliate gilt decoration is in an excellent state. Four of the ten decanters have some damage or breakage. This is quite amazing when one considers the fact that they are over 200 years old and probably traveled by coach over many rough roads through the centuries! One stopper is missing and one is an obvious replacement. The others are believed to be original. Originally there were tumblers and cordials, but sadly, these are long gone, although the wood case still remains. The stand was recently custom built of reclaimed walnut. This allows the chest to serve as a handsome side table when closed. This beautiful, rare 18th century liquor chest would be an marvelous addition to a gentleman's study or den. We will need to consult about a shipping cost. Original price was $2,500. | ||
