Portrait of English Thoroughbred Horse SOLD
Oil on canvas portrait of Semolina, a bay thoroughbred mare. Signed and dated, T. (Thomas) Bicks, 1901. Semolina (1887-1909) was a daughter of the great undefeated stallion St. Simon, owned and bred by William Cavendish-Bentinck, 6th Duke of Portland, at the famous Welbeck Abbey Stud. Semolina, though small (15 hands), had an outstanding racing career, winning 13 of her 15 starts, including the 1,000 Guineas at the age of 3. She wasn't as successful as a brood mare, however. She died in 1909 and is buried at Welbeck. The Duke of Portland commissioned Thomas Bicks to paint his horses in the early part of the last century and this is one of a pair that we currently have for sale (the other is 'Ayrshire'). Both are in their original frames and underwent restoration, including re-lining of the canvas, at some time in their lives. Framed size is 20 X 16 inches. Bicks was an enormously talented equine painter and these portraits represent a beautiful record of racing history. They would be a nice addition for the serious sporting art collector.
