This is a very old lute called Sgra-snyan, it is made in a single piece of hard red wood with very elegant lines of carving; the upper part is carved in a circular shape ending as stylized horse head with a beautiful encrusted back patina. The sun is also carved on top of the horse head and on each side indicating strong animist influences. A small oil lamp representing Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and beauty. Laxmi is also the consort of Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world against destruction. The casting is very precise with a patina showing obvious signs of great age, probably from beginning of 20th century. Notice some old accidents on the stand. This figure is from South India. Height is 3 1/3 inches (8.5 cm ).

A Phurba, also called shamanic knife, is a ritual dagger used to drive away evil spirits or negativity. This is a very old piece coming from Tamang peoples, built on the classical three-side symmetrical model. The top part represents three human faces, which have been bitten probably by mice a long time ago. The central part is the grip and represents the tibetan design of a dorje, also called vajra.
