A small phurba with nicely carved top. Note that the round precisely carved faces show different expression, the central part is wrapped with threads to ensure protection of the shaman during his fight with bad spirits.Height 8 1/3 inches (21 inches). The piece is nicely mounted on an iron stand.

A Phurba, also called shamanic knife, is a ritual dagger used to drive away evil spirits or negative influences. This is a classical example from Tamang people built on the classical three-side symetrical model. The top part is made of three human heads. The central part is the grip and represent the tibetan design of a dorje also called vajra. The lower part which represents a three-side blade, exhibits a precise carving representing an interweaving of three snakes used to fight evils spirits. ...click for details

This is a very old lute called Sgra-snyan, it is made in a single piece of hard red wood with very elegant lines of carving; the upper part is carved in a circular shape ending as stylized horse head with a beautiful encrusted back patina. The sun is also carved on top of the horse head and on each side indicating strong animist influences. A small tribal bronze casting, representing a standing woman, probably from Rajasthan. Notice the oversized head, Nice oxidized patina and obvious signs of use in some areas of the figure. Age: probably from beginning of 20th century. Height 3" (7.5 cm). Good condition.

A small oil lamp representing Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and beauty. Laxmi is also the consort of Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world against destruction. The casting is very precise with a patina showing obvious signs of great age, probably from beginning of 20th century. Notice some old accidents on the stand. This figure is from South India. Height is 3 1/3 inches (8.5 cm ).
