Very interesting and fine Nuo performance old mask probably from the Tujia people of Guizhou. Although primarily animistic in nature, Nuo rituals, have incorporated Taoist and Buddhist deities into their ceremonies. This mask represents the character of He Shang, a Buddhist monk who attempts to convert the locals to Chinese Buddhism. He is often figured as a smiling friendly face. This is a flat mask figuring probably an important Taoist dignitary. A very simple but old work likely over 150 year, the mask is carved in hard wood, very old original polychromia , brown, black and white, it has probably been never repainted except few chips of the painting this mask is in a very good condition, height : inches . the piece is mounted on an iron stand
