Very interesting and fine Nuo performance old mask probably from the Tujia people of Guizhou. Although primarily animistic in nature, Nuo rituals, have incorporated Taoist and Buddhist deities into their ceremonies. This is a small mask figuring the well honored deity Tu Di Po. A very simple but old work likely over 150 years, the mask is carved in hard wood, it has probably been never painted which rather unusual for Nuo mask and has been used as it , as indicated by the inside hard black handling patina; this mask is in a very good condition, height : 7 inches. the piece is mounted on an iron stand

Printing wood block used for a prayer flag, representing three lamas, probably three Bodhisattvas as they all have the gesture of argument ("Vitarka Mudra"). Very old printing wood block used for the Tibetan prayer flag, representing the "Chatra" (the Buddhist holy parasol). It is a symbol of Buddhist goddesses such as Pancharaksa, Usnisasita. A primitive figure standing in the well identified Namaste position. The figure stands in the sitting position. The legs are carved but remains attached to the body, the hands are joined in the Namaste position to pay respect to the audience. The figure is covered with white mineral pigments and shows old traces of insects (no more present). Original painted tibetan tsampa box. Tsampa is the flour obtained from grilled barley; it is the daily food of Tibetan people. The painting represents traditional Buddhist designs (eternal knot and lotus leaves). The background color of the box is in the dark gold like tone, attenuated by smoke and dust.
